A snapshot of startling beauty
Small maritime city at the doors of Pays d'Auge and Cote Fleurie, Honfleur has been an inspiration for painters and artists since the 19th century. Its picturesque alleys, its preserved old houses, its old harbour and its quasi-divine light have bewitched Eugene Boudin, Jongkind, Monet and Charles Baudelaire.
Honfleur could be summed up in its old harbour... The clock stops still, the sight is breathtaking : 17th and 18th centuries picturesque houses proudly stand on St. Catherine Wharf. High and narrow, they display their beautiful half-timber frames colored by blue-grey slates. Right across, on Saint-Etienne Wharf, stand The "Lieutenance" and other old houses that look more opulent with their stone frames. Yet they are even older... Lazy boats are mooring all along the wharves seem to await the tide.
A stroll about old Honfleur narrow streets of the old Honfleur enables the visitor to discover other old houses full of history, salt granaries and curious Sainte-Catherine church, made out of wood in the 15th and 16th centuries, adorned with two naves and a separate bell tower.
Museums lovers can choose between Eugene Boudin Museum, dedicated to 19th century painters, Museum of Old Honfleur, which tells the story of the habour, and the Satie Houses, on the steps of famous facetious French composer Erik Satie.
For a breathtaking panorama, climb up Côte de Grâce, you will enjoy a superb view over the Seine estuary, Le Havre harbour and Normandy Bridge.> Learn more :
