A snapshot of startling beauty
Small maritime city at the doors of Pays d'Auge and Cote Fleurie, Honfleur has been an inspiration for painters and artists since the 19th century. Its picturesque alleys, its preserved old houses, its old harbour and its quasi-divine light have bewitched Eugene Boudin, Jongkind, Monet and Charles Baudelaire. Honfleur could be summed up in its old harbour... The clock stops still, the sight is breathtaking : 17th and 18th centuries picturesque houses proudly stand on St. Catherine Wharf. High and narrow, they display their beautiful half-timber frames colored by blue-grey slates. Right across, on Saint-Etienne Wharf, stand The "Lieutenance" and other old houses that look more opulent with their stone frames. Yet they are even older... Lazy boats are mooring all along the wharves seem to await the tide. A stroll about old Honfleur narrow streets of the old Honfleur enables the visitor to discover other old houses full of history, salt granaries and curious Sainte-Catherine church, made out of wood in the 15th and 16th centuries, adorned with two naves and a separate bell tower. Museums lovers can choose between Eugene Boudin Museum, dedicated to 19th century painters, Museum of Old Honfleur, which tells the story of the habour, and the Satie Houses, on the steps of famous facetious French composer Erik Satie. For a breathtaking panorama, climb up Côte de Grâce, you will enjoy a superb view over the Seine estuary, Le Havre harbour and Normandy Bridge.

Welcome to Cabourg !
Cabourg is a wonderful tribute to the Belle Epoque with its beautiful 19th century villas, its promenade, its fine sandy beach, its casino and its Grand Hotel ... Nothing much remains of the former fishermen village, Cabourg having been designed to become a fashionable seaside resort. There is no denying that the place is very popular since its foundation in 1855... Enjoy a stroll about its large avenues lined with superb villas with flowery gardens, take a walk on Marcel Proust Promenade which runs along the seafront, you will pass the Casino and the Grand Hotel... Enjoy a bit of sunbathing on the beach of Cabourg, then go to Dives-sur-Mer, on the other side of the estuary, it is worth the visit with its 14th, 15th and 16th centuries buildings...

 

Pont-l'Évêque - Calvados

Terroir of cheese...
Nestled in a valley so pleasant that it has been named "the coast garden", Pont-l'Evêque is a picturesque Norman village traversed by tributaries of the Touques river. Pont-l'Evêque is to be discovered strolling on foot through its old streets and pretty bridges... Ancient tanners' houses, 16th century half-timbered houses (don't miss The Golden Eagle Inn) are really worth the glance. Some buildings are worth a longer visit : Hotel Montpensier (current library) with its checkerboard pattern of pink bricks and stones, Hotel of Brilly (currentTown Hall) and former Dominican convent which is one of the most beautiful half-timbered building in the whole town with its gallery and carved pillars. As to Saint-Michel church, it's a magnificent building of flamboyant gothic style with modern stained-glass windows made by a master glass maker. Do not leave Pont-L'Evêque without having tasted its most famous cheese AOC Pont-l'évêque renowned since the 13th century. Don't forget to visit the castle of Betteville a few miles away. It houses a very interesting museum of La Belle Epoque de l'Automobile.

 

Trouville-sur-Mer - Calvados

A taste of authenticity
Unlike Deauville, from which it stands separated only by the Touques river, Trouville has kept an authenticity and a simplicity that would almost hide the fact that it was a famous seaside resort long before its neighbour ... Boosted by the activity of its fishing port and the vitality of its inhabitants, Trouville is busy outside the tourist season. Take a stroll on the Touques banks or about the harbor, visit the local market on Wednesday and Sunday mornings, take a walk on the beach, fringed with Art Deco cabins... No wonder Trouville was an inspiration for the greatest painters and artists of the second half of the nineteenth century ... The most beautiful villas of Trouville are concentrated along the beach and bear lovely names: Villa Sidonia, Persian House, Villa "the Waves" ... The casino and hotels of the Belle Epoque, immortalised by poster designer Savignac are must-sees... Don't miss the view from the Corniche road, it embraces all Côte Fleurie ...
