Medieval city in Pays d'Auge
"Pebble stream" in Danish, "Trout stream" for the Norwegian, Orbec owes its name to the Vikings. But it is only after the One Hundred Years War, that it really grows to become the medieval town one can still admire today, rich with a remarkable heritage and dotted with beautiful half-timbered houses...
Its narrow alleys and cobbled streets (wonderful High Street and rue des Religieuses) are lined with 15th century half-timbered houses, 16th century mansions, 18th and 19th centuries private mansions. Along the Vespiere river, mills, former tanneries and Lanquetot dairy testify to activities closely linked to water...
Don't miss Notre-Dame church (15th-16th centuries), flanked by a high square tower, whose choir hosts an organ case from Bec Hellouin Abbey. Take a look at the former Capuchin Monastery and former Augustines convent, both from the 17th century and do not miss the Old Manor House, now the municipal museum. Hotel-Dieu Saint-Remy chapel also is a must-see...
Hotel of Croisy, where Debussy in love with Orbec his hometown and beautiful Gaby composed "Jardins sous la pluie" deserves more than a glance...> Learn more :
